“Why I Practice Preventive Medicine”
by Dr. Dawn Scarzella
Let’s prevent disease!
“It is one thing to be focused on researching for a cure to help all those living with cancer, but it another to do something to prevent the disease in the first place.” ~ Dawn Scarzella, MD – SPRINGS UROLOGY
Preventive medicine is a medical discipline that focuses on preventing diseases and promoting a general state of health and well being.
When preventive medicine is applied to a whole population, it includes extensive work in public health, pest and insect control, vaccinations, food safety, and improvements in hygiene for water supplies, homes, and individuals.
“I tell patient’s everyday that I am a big believer in preventive medicine and I do my part by screening to find disease in it’s earliest and most treatable stages. I also try to do even more by educating patients about the effects of environmental exposures and the carcinogenic effects of everything we eat, drink, touch, inhale, rub into our face and skin, bath in and breathe. This effort is to hopefully increase awareness and decrease the “risk of developing disease in the first place”. ”
My medical training alone brought these risks to my attention, but it wasn’t until my own Mom was diagnosed with her fourth type of cancer that I was jolted into the reality of how we live can effect how long we live.
I began a journey to seriously educate myself and take what I have learned and apply it to my patients, myself and my family.
How times have changed ……
In the year 1900, the risk of getting diagnosed with cancer was 1 in 30.
In the year 1980, the risk was 1 in 5.
In the year 1990, the risk was 1 in 4.
In the year 1995, the risk was 1 in 3.
In the year 2000, the risk was 1 in 2.
Now 15 years later …. what is it today?
But everything is tested by the government and the FDA so if it’s in a bottle it must be safe right????
This is the “New Normal” for childhood in America:
-Cancer is now the leading cause of death in children under the age of 15.
-1 in 6 has learning disabilities
-1 in 9 has asthma
-1 in 10 has ADHD
-1 in 10 has food allergies
-1 in 20 has seizures
-1 in 42 males (1 in 68) children has autism
Are you concerned yet? If you’re not … then you are not paying attention.
Start living a cleaner, healthier life by removing the chemicals from your home and your life.
The Environmental Working Group as a Resource:
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is an American environmental organization that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of toxic chemicals, agricultural subsidies, public lands, and corporate accountability. EWG is a non-profit organization (501(c) whose mission, is “to use the power of public information to protect public health and the environment.”
The Environmental Working Group’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, we drive consumer choice and civic action.
Is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment.
EWG works for us. Do you know what’s in your tap water? What about your shampoo? What’s lurking in the cleaners underneath your sink? What pesticides are on your food? How about the farms, fracking wells and factories in your local area? Do you know what safeguards they use to protect your water, soil, air and your kids? Which large agribusinesses get your tax dollars and why? What are GMOs? What do they do to our land and water?
More than two decades ago EWG set out to answer these questions, and more, and to empower you to get to know your environment and protect your health.
The EWG created the cosmetic database “Skin Deep” as a way for people to evaluate the safety of the products they are using. on “Skin Deep” you are also able to look up the safety of specific ingredients and see what products are safer to use.
“The EWG has been a valuable resource for my family and has been a guide to healthier living and a means to cancer prevention”.
Great! We are all starting to realize that not everything in our world is not being tested and proven safe for our families. It is become a national movement in this country to change policy and be honest about what is in our foods and products. So now if it says “organic“, “safe“, “natural” or “pure” it must be true right??
Far from it. Just saying it is on the front of the bottle means nothing these days. It is more marketing than meaningful. It is called “Greenwashing”. Where carcinogens and endocrine disruptors are hidden in amongst the wording or buried with the few ingredients that are organic or natural. This is adding to the confusion. What is good for us and what is not?
My mission as a doctor and mother has been to find safe, quality beauty products, cleaning products and foods to use for myself, my family and my patients. It has not been easy.
Because of greenwashing and false marketing I was led to believe that several of the products I had chosen over others were healthier because they said “natural” or “pure” on the front. This is not the shocking reality.
The key has been to read the ingredients on the back of every bottle no matter what it claims on the front.
“Know your ingredients”. Be aware of what it is you are absorbing, eating and breathing. An average women uses 515 chemicals every single day.
“None of us can do everything, but we all can do something.”
